fraymedia Foundation is delighted to announce that applications for the inaugural Phangisile Mtshali Grant Award for Transformational Public Relations have officially closed, and the response has been inspiring. Across South Africa, young women journalists and communicators eager to build ethical, purpose-driven PR businesses submitted innovative and thoughtful proposals — each reflecting the spirit of integrity and impact that Phangisile stood for.

The judging panel is now carefully reviewing all submissions ahead of the interview stage. Shortlisted candidates will all be paired with experienced mentors from the communications and media sectors.
Plans are also underway for the announcement of the first award recipient on 1 December 2025 — World AIDS Day — a fitting tribute to Phangisile’s lifelong commitment to health communication and social justice. Charmeela Bhagowat, founding member of the fraymedia Foundation and veteran journalist.
