Grant-Writing Strategies in the Shrinking Funding Landscape Webinar

As journalism funding shrinks and competition for grants intensifies, over 100 African journalists gathered for a practical webinar on March 26, 2025, hosted by the Fraymedia Foundation in partnership with the Association of Independent Publishers (AIP). The session provided actionable advice for navigating today’s tough funding environment and crafting compelling grant applications.

Moderated by AIP’s Kate Skinner, the event featured seasoned voices from both sides of the funding table. Nadine Hoffman of the International Women’s Media Foundation spotlighted the ripple effects of U.S. funding cuts and urged journalists to stay resilient—emphasising clarity, audience insight, and persistence. Bongiwe Tutu of the Africa-China Reporting Project stressed relevance, methodology, and the power of a well-defined story. And veteran journalist Anton Harber, now with the Henry Nxumalo Foundation, reminded attendees to “think like a funder”—research thoroughly, be specific, and ask for help when needed.

The webinar also explored corporate partnerships as a growing but cautious funding avenue. Above all, the event reinforced the importance of preparation, storytelling clarity, and peer-driven support for independent journalism.
